The iMERMAID partner SMAT participated in the UNIGHT European Researchers’ Night at the Giardini Reali in Turin, presenting the iMERMAID project to both citizens and the research community. UNIGHT is a celebration of the European Researchers’ Night, aiming to foster dialogue between researchers and societal actors, emphasise the impact of research on daily life, and enhance connections between citizens and science.
Event Highlights:
During this event, SMAT delivered a comprehensive oral presentation of the iMERMAID project, highlighting its significant role in addressing the decontamination of the Mediterranean Basin from Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs). The presentation aimed to raise awareness about the environmental challenges related to CECs and the steps being taken to tackle this issue through cutting-edge research and technology.
Particular focus was placed on SMAT’s contribution to the project, including:
- Implementation of a Pilot System for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater, showcasing the innovative approach SMAT is taking to promote cleaner and safer water in the Mediterranean region.
- Development of an advanced sensor system to effectively monitor the presence of these metals, ensuring accurate and efficient detection in wastewater.
Additionally, SMAT introduced its schooling project, designed to engage students in understanding and addressing water pollution challenges. The project’s goals, methods of implementation, and practical examples from the workbook missions were shared to highlight the educational and awareness-raising efforts tied to the iMERMAID initiative.
