  • Background

Pomorie Lake is a coastal lagoon on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, part of the Natura 2000 network. It is an ecologically valuable site, providing habitat for migratory birds and supporting salt production and tourism. At the same time, the lake is vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures, including nutrient inflows, pesticides and micropollutants from   agriculture and economic activities.

  • Key facts

  • Implementation area location: Pomorie Lake, Bulgaria – protected under Natura 2000.
  • Size & type: Coastal lagoon (~8 km²) with high ecological and economic value.
  • Main pressures: Wastewater discharge, agricultural runoff, vineyards, industrial pollutants.
  • Challenges: Limited systematic data hinders effective assessment of pollutant dynamics and ecosystem health, highlighting the need for innovative technologies to improve monitoring and pollution prevention.
  • Local stakeholders: Municipality of Pomorie, Local Communities , Fisheries, environmental NGOs etc.
  • Project description and expected results

The MP3 Lake project focuses on monitoring and assessing emerging micropollutants and priority pollutants in Pomorie Lake using advanced analytical methods and sensor-based technologies. The project integrates field deployment of innovative water quality sensors, laboratory validation of priority substances, and stakeholder engagement to support sustainable lake management.

Expected results:

  • Establishment of a baseline dataset for priority pollutants and micropollutants in Pomorie Lake.
  • Demonstration of innovative sensor technologies for real-time water quality monitoring.
  • Strengthened capacity of local authorities for evidence-based decision-making.
  • Increased awareness among stakeholders and citizens about pollution risks and ecosystem protection.
  • Contribution to regional and EU-level water policy goals by providing transferable methodologies.
