MARINER is the initiative that addresses enhancing water quality monitoring in the Marina and Qatsaa Beach in Eilat, two areas crucial for tourism, recreation, and biodiversity.
In the initial phase, a baseline pollution assessment will be established to identify key contaminants. The project is confirmed to deploy the Sentinel-1 satellite model for oil spill detection. Based on the assessment results, a second iMERMAID technology will be selected—either the heavy metal sensor box or the electrochemical sensor box for organic micropollutants—to address the most relevant local challenges. This sense-making approach ensures maximum impact and real-world testing of the technologies.
Alongside the technical work, MARINER will engage local stakeholders, raise public awareness, and produce policy recommendations. This initiative aims to position Eilat as a model for Mediterranean and Red Sea marinas seeking scalable and replicable pollution monitoring and remediation solutions.
