On the occasion of World Water Day 2025, the EU-funded iMERMAID project proudly announces the launch of its official animated video, providing an engaging overview of the project’s efforts to combat chemical contamination in the Mediterranean Sea. Aligned with this year’s global theme, “Mountains and Glaciers: Water Towers,” iMERMAID underscores the interconnectedness between land, water resources, and marine ecosystems.
This short, captivating video explains in an accessible format how the iMERMAID consortium—comprising 26 partners from across Europe and beyond—is actively developing and testing cutting-edge technologies and collaborative solutions to address the growing threat of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CoECs).
Viewers will discover key innovations like the iWIRE platform, a comprehensive catalogue of chemical monitoring and remediation solutions designed to detect, prevent, and reduce pollution at its source, before it harms marine biodiversity and human health.
Additionally, the video highlights ongoing demonstration cases across five countries—Spain, Tunisia, Italy, Cyprus, and Greece—testing transformative solutions such as digital twins for pollution control, microfluidic technologies for water treatment, and blockchain for traceability and accountability.
Beyond technology, iMERMAID promotes critical policy dialogue, community engagement, and capacity building, supporting stakeholders in shaping policies for improved environmental protection and sustainable water management.
